How to Wash a Costume Wig (Synthetic or Human Hair) Without Ruining It
A cheap costume wig can last for years if you wash and store it right. Here is how to clean a synthetic wig in cool water, detangle it without frizz, dry it on a stand and keep it ready for the next party.

Most party and cosplay wigs are synthetic fibre, which behaves very differently from real hair. Hot water, a hair dryer or rough brushing can frizz or melt the fibres for good. The good news: washing a wig the right way takes about twenty minutes plus drying time, and it brings a tired costume wig back to life.
Before you start: check what it is made of
- Synthetic wigs are the norm for costumes. The label or packaging usually says so. They hold their style but do not like heat unless sold as heat-resistant.
- Human hair wigs can be washed and styled more like your own hair.
- If the label gives care instructions, follow them over any general advice, including this guide.
How often to wash a costume wig
Wash it when it looks dull, smells of sweat or smoke, or feels stiff from hairspray. For a wig worn a few times a year, that might be once a season. Washing too often wears synthetic fibres faster.
How to wash a synthetic wig, step by step
- Detangle first. Hold the wig by the cap and gently comb from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush. Never brush from the roots down through knots.
- Fill a basin with cool water. Add a small amount of wig shampoo or a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and swirl.
- Soak, do not scrub. Turn the wig inside out, submerge it and swish it gently for a minute or two, then let it soak for about five minutes. Do not rub the fibres together.
- Rinse in cool water until no suds remain.
- Condition (optional). A wig conditioner or a light conditioner diluted in water helps with softness. Keep it away from the cap, rinse lightly or as the product directs.
- Remove water gently. Press the wig in a towel; never wring or twist.
- Air dry on a stand. Put it on a wig stand or a tall bottle, away from heat and direct sun. Styled or curly wigs keep their shape better on a stand.
- Finish when dry. Comb gently from the ends up again. A light spray of wig detangler helps with long fibres.
Human hair wigs
Wash with a gentle shampoo and conditioner, lukewarm water and the same no-wringing rule. Human hair can be heat-styled, but use a heat protectant and low settings, and expect it to need restyling after every wash because it does not hold a factory style like synthetic fibre.
Common wig problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Frizz at the ends | Friction from collars or rough brushing | Detangler and patient combing; trim the worst ends |
| Tangles at the nape | Rubbing against clothes | Detangle in small sections, from the ends up |
| Stiff or sticky fibres | Hairspray or glue build-up | A proper wash with a soak |
| Melted, crinkled fibres | Heat from a dryer, oven or styling tool | Cannot be reversed; prevent by keeping heat away |
Storing wigs between parties
- Store clean and fully dry.
- Keep wigs on a stand, or loosely in a hairnet inside a box or bag so they do not crush.
- Keep them out of sunlight, which can fade bright colours.
- Store with the original packaging or a breathable bag rather than an airtight plastic one if the wig is not completely dry.
Hygiene
Wigs touch the scalp, so wash a second-hand or borrowed wig before wearing it and wear a wig cap underneath. If your scalp is sensitive or reacts to a wig, stop wearing it and ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Questions
Can I wash a synthetic wig with regular shampoo?
A small amount of gentle, sulphate-free shampoo works. Wig shampoo is formulated for synthetic fibres and is the safer choice.
Can I use a hair dryer on a costume wig?
Not on a standard synthetic wig: heat can melt or frizz the fibres. Let it air dry on a stand unless the wig is labelled heat-resistant.
Can I put a wig in the washing machine?
It is not recommended. Agitation tangles and stretches the fibres and can damage the cap.
How long does a wig take to dry?
Usually several hours, often overnight for long or thick wigs.
